What does "be First" mean?  "be First" is an inspiring, bold and exciting way to express the spirit of this university we all love.  The theme "be First" reflects the reasons why we know students choose FSU - the personal attention they receive here and our smaller class sizes.

At Fairmont State, you’ll find: • A wide range of fields of study -- 6 associate degree programs and 90 baccalaureate degree programs, as well as graduate degree programs in business, education, teaching, criminal justice and human services. • Outstanding, friendly faculty who will know your name and care about your success. • A safe and active campus located in Fairmont, West Virginia, which is the best of both worlds – close to larger cities such as Morgantown and Pittsburgh but also close to opportunities for outdoor adventure such as skiing, rock climbing and whitewater rafting. • Room to grow through internships, research and travel experiences. • A solid career path – more than 87 percent of our graduates find jobs within one year.

True or false? College is all about classes, writing papers and studying for exams. Answer: False. At Fairmont State, it’s about finding yourself. This means you will lay a firm foundation for lifelong learning and a career. Some of that will happen in class, at the library and in study groups. But some of it will occur as you assume leadership positions on campus, serve the larger community and try new things. Fairmont State has more than 85 student organizations ranging from Student Government, professional and honorary societies to fraternities, sororities, music groups, religious clubs and art clubs. Many of our students participate in Intramural sports such as flag football, softball, horseshoes and backgammon. FSU is a member of the NCAA, Division II, and the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with 14 varsity athletic programs available for men and women. The Office of Student Affairs and the School of Fine Arts present quality theatre, art and musical events throughout the year. You’ll have the opportunity to hear nationally prominent speakers with diverse viewpoints. You’ll learn and grow as a person – inside and outside of the classroom.
