The University of New Orleans is a major urban research university that affords students a rich educational experience including interaction with accomplished practitioners in a wide variety of fields. UNO’s classification as an SREB Four-Year 2 institution, as a Carnegie Doctoral/Research University-Intensive, and as a COC/SACS Level VI institution attests to the strength of its research in its many research centers and institutes. The approximately 12,000 students enjoy a selection of more than 100 degree programs, half of which are at the graduate level. In addition, extracurricular activities, including NCAA Division One intercollegiate athletics, an extensive program of intramural sports, and frequent exhibits and programs in music, drama, ballet, and the fine arts round out the student experience. Culturally, socially, economically, and intellectually, the University of New Orleans is one of the major assets of the City of New Orleans and the State of Louisiana. UNO designates “Programs of Distinction” reflecting excellence in academic programs and research. Included in the designated programs are Kabacoff School of Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism; Master of Science in Taxation; Global Entrepreneurship Initiative; Teacher Education and Counselor Education; Charter Schools; Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering; Film Arts; Creative Writing; Urban Planning and Regional Studies; Jazz Studies; Center for Hazards Assessment, Response and Technology; International Studies Center; Advanced Materials Research Institute; Pontchartrain Institute for Environmental Sciences; National Center for Data Assurance Education; Bioinformatics; Conservation Biology. The College of Engineering has identified Civil, Electrical and Mechanical as engineering programs of distinction among their offerings.
