Student Activities and Involvement at SIUE

Students who are actively involved in their own learning and development are more likely to be successful in college. Institutions measure the effectiveness of these opportunities in a variety of ways to better understand what types of activities and programs students find the most helpful.

Student Learning at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville

All colleges and universities use multiple approaches to measure student learning. Many of these are specific to particular disciplines, many are coordinated with accrediting agencies, and many are based on outcomes after students have graduated.

The Senior Assignment (SRA) is the hallmark of a baccalaureate education at SIUE. The SRA serves as a demonstrable connection between the student's major area of study and the full breadth of general education skills and competencies. While involved in the Senior Assignment, students are actively engaged in the development, rather than the consumption, of knowledge. The SRA optimizes assessment that recognizes the importance of open-ended, holistic, problem based assessment that requires critical thinking. For the past three years, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville has been recognized by U.S. News and World Report for having an outstanding senior capstone experience. In the publication "America's Best Colleges 2009," SIUE joined the ranks of 17 other institutions of higher learning, including Princeton, Harvard, MIT and Duke, in the "Programs to Look for: Senior Capstone" category.

This is part of a pilot project to better understand and compare what students learn between their freshman and senior years at different colleges and universities.

Results from the pilot project using one of the three learning outcomes tests are not yet available.
