The Eastern Community
Centrally located in beautiful eastern Connecticut, Eastern is nestled in the rolling hills of Willimantic, Connecticut, a small city of diversified interests and styles of living with a population of 22,000. Since 1986, Eastern has nearly doubled the size of its campus to 182 acres. The campus consists of more than 50 administrative, instructional, and residential buildings, encompassing more than one million square feet of space. Eastern’s award-winning J. Eugene Smith Library is the hub of scholarly activity on campus. Open more than 90 hours each week, the library’s terrace, reading garden, stone bench and multiple seating levels provide quiet and relaxing areas to read and study. Webb Hall, Goddard Hall, Shafer Hall, Planetarium, the Media Center and the Child and Family Development Resource Center serve as model academic facilities. Eastern’s new Student Center, Sports Center and athletic complex support student-centered activities and engagement to help enrich the liberal arts experience. Built to U.S. Green Building Council standards, Eastern’s new Science Center opened in fall 2008, and a new Performing Arts Center is in the planning stage. Additionally, a new campus police station and visitor center is scheduled to open in 2009.
